Custom Color: Tinting Your Lipsticks

The custom lip color I made by tinting a dusty rose shade with a hint of white

If you read my last post, you know every girl needs three lip colors for a well-rounded beauty arsenal: nude, pink, and red. Well, by adding one additional shade you'll be able to turn those three lip colors into thirty plus! It may seem strange to wear white lipstick, but if you think about it as a mixing medium rather than a color to rock solo, it will be your BFF before you know it. Here are a few of my favorite products for tinting lipsticks and the tools to achieve an unlimited array of colors without tapping into your beauty budget.

1. NYX Macaron Lippie in 'Coconut'

This opaque lipstick can be mixed into your current lipsticks to tint them for a truly custom color like I did for my client (pictured above).

2. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics 'Creme Colour Concentrate'

I like the versatility of this product because it can be used on lips, eyes and cheeks, meaning you can intensify the colors of your blushes and eyeshadows also. Sometimes you may fall in love with a color but it doesn't always translate the way you want to once it's applied. Using a product like this will give you a true color payoff.

3. Cosmetic Spatula

These are used to scrape the desired amount of product from the lipstick tube or pot onto either the back of your hand or a palette so you can mix the colors together. I use the back of my hand to help warm the products for ease of mixing when I'm in a rush.

4. Mixing Palette

If you want to mix lipsticks, foundations and lots of other products, having one of these around will keep things neat and is easy to clean with a makeup wipe.

5. Pro Makeup Artist Custom Palette

Finally, if you find yourself mixing more than not, you can use your spatula to scrape the entire tube and de-pot your lipsticks into a palette like this- the same way I do. I can create any number of shades this way! Besides, to get the best application, it's recommended to use a brush to apply your lipsticks, so they don't need to be in tube form anyway. This palette is pretty petite and will fit in most handbags.

I hope you're inspired to play with your makeup more. Remember, there are no hard and fast rules to applying products. Experiment and have fun and then you'll know why I love my job so much!
